Dr. Sam Zeraatiannejaddavani is an internationally recognized professor of cardiovascular surgery, renowned for his groundbreaking contributions in cardiac and thoracic transplant surgery, as well as for pioneering novel approaches to complex cardiovascular conditions. With a career marked by surgical innovation, academic excellence, and relentless dedication to patient care, Dr. Zeraatiannejaddavani has become a leading voice in shaping the future of cardiothoracic surgery. After receiving his foundational medical training with distinction, Dr. Zeraatiannejaddavani pursued advanced fellowships in cardiothoracic transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and pulmonary endarterectomy in leading transplant centers across Europe and North America. He rapidly ascended the academic ranks, ultimately becoming a full professor of cardiovascular surgery and an authority in heart and lung transplantation, heart failure surgery, and congenital complex reoperations. Among his most transformative achievements is his role as a pioneer in Donation after Complete Cardiac Death (DCD). Dr. Zeraatiannejaddavani successfully introduced and implemented protocols that enabled the expansion of the donor pool using DCD techniques for both heart and lung transplants, breaking long-standing barriers in transplant candidacy. His work not only challenged traditional paradigms but also provided viable solutions to organ shortages, especially for high-risk and borderline cases. Dr. Zeraatiannejaddavani has also contributed to multiple surgical innovations, including: ? The first in-human in vivo lung perfusion and deflation (IVLPD) technique for borderline metastatic lung preservation. ? Refinement of beating-heart transplantation methods, minimizing ischemic time and improving graft function. ? Advanced techniques in total artificial heart (TAH) implantation, particularly innovations in watertight atrioventricular groove reconstruction. ? Development of hybrid surgical approaches for complex congenital and acquired heart diseases, including modified procedures following Senning/Mustard operations in transposition of great arteries (TGA) using donor homografts. ? Surgical excellence in pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), incorporating cerebral protection, selective cooling, and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest with unprecedented outcomes. In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Zeraatiannejaddavani is a prolific academic contributor with numerous peer-reviewed publications, surgical technique videos, and invited lectures across international platforms such as ISHLT, EACTS, and STS. He is also a valued mentor to cardiovascular surgery fellows worldwide and a respected contributor to global educational platforms like Medtube and Perfusfind. Dr. Zeraatiannejaddavani?s commitment to humanitarian medical missions, his advocacy for ethical organ procurement, and his visionary thinking continue to inspire a new generation of surgeons. His work exemplifies the fusion of technical mastery with compassionate care, advancing not just the boundaries of what is surgically possible, but also what is ethically and humanely essential in modern transplant medicine.
